The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday, by Jerusalem and the heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin as well as Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon the chairman of Gihon as well as a multitude of cyclists were also present.

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the vision of shifting the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel connecting to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. It's designed to encourage cycling within the city's residents and to promote the green movement in the capital."

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility.  נווה פריצקי The plant is located west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.
